Alebrijes are fantastical, brightly colored sculptures of mythical creatures that are an iconic part of Mexican folk art. The creation of alebrijes is attributed to Pedro Linares, a Mexican artist from Mexico City, in the 1930s. According to the story, Linares fell seriously ill and, while bedridden, experienced vivid dreams or hallucinations of a strange place resembling a forest. In this dream, he encountered bizarre, fantastical creatures that were hybrids of different animals, each with bright colors and strange features. The creatures in his dream kept repeating the word "alebrijes."
